The Unit supports clinical and communication skills education in healthcare settings and in skills centre laboratories using state of the art and evidence-based learning and assessment methods. To achieve this involves providing students and staff with access to a wide range of high quality learning activities and resources. The Unit also runs staff development courses in the use of simulation as a teaching method and has developed a bank of trained simulated patients.

Ultimately our goal is to prepare students for practice and ensure they graduate with the very best of clinical and communication skills, able to work collaboratively in healthcare teams to provide safe and effective care to patients now and in the future.

Barts and The London was one of the first UK schools to establish a Clinical Skills Centre (http://www.clinicalskillscentre.ac.uk/)and to introduce a skills-based qualifying examination. These innovations led to commendations from the GMC and the QAA.
In 2005 the Higher Education Funding Council awarded Queen Mary and City University the prestigious Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) status for Clinical and Communication Skills Education.

Students learning communication skills

CETL http://www.cetl.org.uk/ benefits healthcare students from medicine and dentistry (Queen Mary), nursing, midwifery, speech and language, and radiography (City). It aims to shift the emphasis from teaching to learning and from teachers to students by building on existing excellence to:

  • Enhance the students experience and support student-centred learning
  • Build an expert inter-professional faculty for clinical skills, rewarding and recognising teaching excellence
  • Pilot and evaluate new methodologies and technologies and disseminate best practice
  • Engage with the NHS to ensure students enter employment with the professional skills and competencies to practice safely in a transforming health care system

The Skills Centre and CETL are based at the Robin Brook Centre.
