IHSE Research Day 2008
IHSE's first Research Afternoon was held on 1st October.
The aims were to learn through brief presentations and posters what research was being done in other Centres within the Institute, and potentially develop collaborations. Each Centre gave presentations to produce an afternoon with excellent variety in both topic and methodology.
The Centre for Medical Education provided a qualitative study by Viv Cook on the experience of becoming a teacher, while John Patterson gave a statistical analysis of standard setting for OSCE exams. The Centre for Sports and Exercise Medicine followed with work on physical activity levels in Tower Hamlets School Children, by Zoe Hudson and a presentation by Dylan Morrissey covering his analytical work on movement and pathology. The Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning presented qualitative work on evaluating educational interventions on communication skills in mental health by Annie Cushing and Julie Attenborough, and giving bad news during an antenatal ultrasound scan by Rosie Simpson. The Centre for Health Sciences presentations both addressed analyses of large datasets: an analysis of practice data evaluating equity of chronic disease management by East London general practices, given by Ellena Badrick, and a data linkage study examining potential links between asthma and school exam performance in Tower Hamlets children, given by Steve Bremner.
Presentations were interspersed with brief summaries of each Centre's research strategies.
Dr Vivien Cook, Centre for Medical Education Becoming a Teacher in Medical Settings: The significance of work-based learning inTower Hamlets'Dr Dylan Morrissey, Centre for Sports and Exercise Medicine The Link Between Movement and Pathology
Dr Rosie Simpson, Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning Preparing for Challenging Communication in Obstetric Ultrasound Scanning
Dr Annie Cushing and Dr Julie Attenborough, Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning Developing Therapeutic Communication Skills in Mental Health: Interprofessional dimensions
Dr Ellena Badrick, Centre for Health Sciences Using practice data to improve chronic disease management in East London
Dr Stephen Bremner, Centre for Health Sciences Is having asthma linked to poor school exam performance? A data linkage study in TowerHamlets
Tea and posters provided a chance for researchers to meet and chat further about each others' work.
The afternoon demonstrated a healthy research culture and expertise in a range of methodologies across IHSE, and certainly achieved the aim of increasing understanding activity across the Institute.
This is the first of what will now be an annual event for the Institute.
