Maria has been module convenor for the Medicine in Society module since January 2002. Her background includes a primary degree in Microbiology from University College Cork, five years working as a biomedical scientist with the PHLS and an MSc in Medical Microbiology at the University of Surrey. She then trained as a nurse and worked in the neurosurgical unit at the Royal London Hospital before moving to primary care nursing and an MSc in Primary Care via the London Academic Training Scheme at Queen Mary. She continues to work as a practice nurse one morning a week. In addition to her role with the Medicine in Society module she teaches communication and clinical skills and acts as a PBL facilitator.
